Synopsis

While going through another series of synchronization tests, all three Eva's are launched when the 12th Angel makes its appearance. Conventional wapons prove useless as Unit-01 sinks into the Angel's shadow. After much research Ritsuko calculates Shinji is inside a "Sea of Durac" in the Angel, but destroying it is almost impossible. Shinji begins to slip into unconsciousness as the life support sustems run out of power.

During a synch test, Shinji scores is now better than that of Asuka and Asuka, of course, becomes angry. Then the 12th angel has finally revealed itself but people at Nerv is surprised that they wasn't able to detect it. They sent the Evas out and they head off towards their positions. Shinji arrives in his position earlier than Asuka and Rei and he gets anxious. He decides to take on the angel on his own. He fired a shot but the angel disappeared just before the bullet hits it. Then a shadow appears under Shinji and he starts to get swallowed. The other Evas rushed to help him but Misato tells them to avoid the shadow. 

Ritsuko is explaining that the angel's real body is the shadow. To destroy it, they will drop bombs into it. Misato disagrees with the plan because she is sure that it will hurt Shinji. 

Inside the angel, Shinji is starting to hallucinate due to his life support is starting to fail. He sees his mom in the form of a bright light. 

Outside, the preparations are done and they are ready to begin the mission. Suddenly, the angel starts to act weird and Unit-1's arm punches out of the shadow. The Eva was able to escape and everyone is in horror to what they have seen. 

The episode ends with Shinji waking up in the hospital and Rei sitting beside him. She leaves and Shinji notices Asuka outside the door.
