Synopsis
Shinji Ikari is summoned to NERV by his cold father, Gendô Ikari, who tells him he has a use for him. At the same time, a giant being known as an "Angel" also arrives in New Tokyo-3, which is met by the ineffectual offense of the U.N. Shinji must pilot the equally giant Evangelion Unit-01, but at what cost?

Shinji arrives in Tokyo-3 (so named because it is the third city of the same name) waiting for a woman that told him to meet her there. He briefly sees a young woman with light blue hair, pale skin, and red eyes in a school uniform (this image is blurry, and is very short). When he turns away after being distracted by some birds and looks back, the girl has vanished (this image is much clearer). Soon after he finds that the city is being attacked by the "Third Angel." The Angels have not been seen in 15 years, but Gendô Ikari (Shinji's father) attests that they have returned.
Shortly after the Angel has started to attack the city, Shinji is nearly killed by it's attacks when he is picked up by the woman from the photograph. They drive off, narrowly escaping being crushed by the angel's foot, while military units deployed by the UN unleash everything they can on the angel. After conventional wepons fail to damage the angel, an N-2 bomb (basically, it is a "clean" nuclear weapon, with no radioactive fallout) is detonated directly on the angel. The shockwave from the N-2 mine knocks out the monitering equipment that the military is using to watch the situation.
Shinji and the woman, just considers themselves lucky to have survived, although her car is damaged, turned on its side, and hit off the road. They manage to push it back over, and the woman introduces herself as Misato Katsuragi.
Back at the military base, they still cannot see what happened due to the EMP (electromagnetic pulse) generated from the N-2 weapon's detonation, although most of the commanders believe the angel to have been destroyed. The image is restored, and almost everyone in the room is shocked to see that the angel is still standing, taking only moderate damage from the blast.
Back with Shinji and Misato, they are back on the road and continuing towards their destination. Misato places a call reporting their status, and requests that a train be ready to take them to their destination. Internally, Misato is upset that her car is destroyed when she still has loan payments to make on it, and that her favorite shirt has been ruined. Shinji asks if it's OK how Misato got the car to run, but Misato says that it's perfectly fine, since it was an emergancy (exactly what is wrong is not expressly stated, but it has something to do with a large amount of batteries). When she makes comments on Shinji's behavior, Shinji has an irritated expression on his face, but Misato says that it's OK because he is a boy. Shinji mentions that Misato acts childish, and she responds by steering the car from side to side on the road (they have the only car on any road).
The angel has begun to regenerate it's body from the damage caused by the N-2 mine, and quickly restores itself to full health.
Shinji and Misato arrive at NERV headquarters. Shinji asks about NERV, and Misato explains that it is an organization directly attached to the UN. Shinji asks if it is the same one his father belongs to, and Misato tells him that it is. She asks if he knows what his father does, and Shinji responds that he knows it is something important to protect the human race.
Gendô is given command of the angel situation by the military commanders. When asked if he would be able to handle the task, he responds that this is what NERV is for. Gendô plans to activate Unit 01. When told that there is no pilot available for it, he says that a replacement pilot will be arriving shortly.
Shinji asks Misato if they are going to where his father is, and Misato tells him that they are. A scene is quickly shown that suggests that Shinji is not on good terms with his father. Misato gives Shinji a manual about the NERV organization. Shinji says that there must be something his father wants him to do, as Gendô never contacts him for any other reason. After clearing a tunnel, the train reaches the Geo-Front (NERV HQ, a spherical cavern, protected by 22 layers of armored bulk heads, located under Tokyo-3 containing a large number of buildings and an environment conaining fields, trees, and a lake). Shinji is awe-inspired by the sight.
Inside NERV headquarters, Misato and Shinji get lost trying to find the place where they need to go. Misato calls for Dr. Ritsuko Akagi, who meets Shinji and Misato at an elevator. Misato tells Ritsuko that Shinji is the "Third Child". As Ritsuko, Shinji, and Misato move through the base, Misato is told that Unit 01 still has not shown any signs of working. Its chances of actually working is 0.000000001%. They enter a building, and Shinji is stunned to see a gigantic robot (as big as the angel) inside of it. Ritsuko states that the robot is humanity's Multi-Purpose Humanoid Fighting Machine, EVANGELION. Shinji discovers that his father only wants him to use as a pilot, and as a result of his anger he refuses to pilot the EVA. We now meet Rei, the pilot of EVA-00, as Shinji has refused to pilot unit 01. Unit 00 is damaged, so 01 must be used. Rei (a young woman with light blue hair, pale skin, and red eyes) is wheeled into the buidling on a stretcher, and looks very injured and is very weak at the moment.
The angel reaches NERV headquarters (it is not inside the GeoFront, as that is underground) and begins to attack the area. As a piece of ceiling falls down, Unit-01 moves its hand to cover Shinji. This should be impossible as it has nothing to control it inside its entry plug. Shinji agrees to pilot Unit 01. He enters the entry plug and is inserted into the Eva.
Inside the EVA, L.C.L. fills the entry plug, and as Shinji is about to suffocate, he starts breathing it in. The L.C.L provides Shinji with oxygen. It tastes strange, but he breathes the liquid in and out freely, and prepares to pilot the system.
EVA is launched, and comes face to face with the angel as it comes out of the ground through the elevator system. A wire connects the EVA to its power source, and as the battle is about to begin, the episode ends.
